For a while we had a great solution where one of my sisters who lives further away handled everything to do with finances. We had some complicated situations (mom had gotten behind on property taxes, had gotten in trouble with the IRS for unpaid taxes, etc) and my sis straightened it all out. Later, when mom was really sick, though, I would have appreciated if family members who weren't helping out would have chipped in to pay for more hours for a caregiver. As it was, we could only afford in-home help one day a week.
Hello caregivers!
One of Caring.com's senior editors, Melanie, is working on a new blog post for Caring Currents and is looking for feedback from our members.
In most families, one sibling ends up providing the bulk of the hands-on caregiving for aging parents while others do less, either because they live further away or have less available time. In your family, do the other siblings help out financially or by taking on tasks to share the work of caring for your family? If so, please share with us your tips and
experiences for sharing the load when it comes to family caregiving. If not, what would you like them to do?
