It sort of sounds like something comparable to medical assistant jobs[glassdoor.com]. Are there agencies in your area that would be willing to hire you on and pay for you to care for your mother?

pie2mats,

The reason that aid is available for people who are caregivers is that they have to give up their jobs in order to care for a loved one. This places them in a position where they have no income and the commitment they have made to care for a loved one is a life-long one. In many cases, insurance will not cover a person who has a disability and they have no choice but to go to a government insurance program like Medicaid. When this happens, if there is a chance of a caregiver working outside of the home, they find they cannot because their income affects whether the person with a disability can keep their much needed insurance, placing them in a precarious position economically. They would love to be able to care for the person they love without recompense, but in today's world, no income results in homelessness and starvation, so they have to look for programs that can help them, so that their loved one will be cared for and the entire household does not end up on the street. I hope this reply helps you to understand why this help is a necessity to some and not a slight in the love they feel for their relative in need. For those who can care for a relative without help, more power to them and I hope they continue to have successful and loving family lives. However, to those who can only exist with this help, it should be there, so that they can retain a modicum of dignity, even though they are unable to enjoy the same success in life.

Thanks for your interest. If you are looking to advocate for people with disabilities, in particular, I would contact A.D.A.P.T.. They are a fairly powerful force in that arena (their protests and work resulted in places like McDonalds and RTD becoming wheelchair accessible and ultimately their actions led to the ADA being passed) and would most likely welcome anyone who would like to assist them. If you would like a copy of caregiver it is in re-shooting and re-editing right now, but I can send out a copy of the original if you would care to have a copy. E-mail me at johnsonm@colorado.edu if you are interested.

Thank you for your information about CDAS.

My 50 year old boyfriend had a massive stroke 8 months ago. He is a writer and local Denver legend within the pool/billiards community. He is charismatic, intelligent and very highly respected in Denver. The problem is he needs assistance so I had to quit my full-time job to take care of him. I am looking into financial assistance for this.

Your post was interesting to me because you live in Colorado and you seem to advocate (via documentaries, etc) for people with disabilities. As a result of Tom's stroke, I too am interested in advocating for people with disabilities to help improve their quality of life and to meet more people like Tom (creative, interesting people suddenly disabled).

Do you have any suggestions on where or how to begin advocating for people with disabilities in order to improve their quality of life?

I am going to search for information on your documentary "Caregiver" also.

hello everyone!

hi, matts here. read the post and still figuring out why some states allows or give payment for someone in the family who raised and feed you all your life and to pay you when they get old or sick. i may sound angry and confused but believe when i say that in my hometown we rather care for our own mother without expectation or payment. depth of gratitude is not measured by the amount of money received by a child conceived, raised, and loved by their parents... we love the care giving work as we are pioneer in the industry, but with comes to blood ties, no amount would be necessary unless circumstance warrants for its needs. good day everyone

I aplied for ihhs aand was aproved to get paid for being a 24- 7 live in care giver to my mother in law.we moved in with her she has dementia, and basicly can not take care of her self,I would say its like having a 2 year old. my husband and I went through 6 months of paper work, evaluations, and home visits by a social worker.Ihhs was backed up thats why it took so long to get aproved.Well my mom in law had a share of cost that she was exspected by ihhs to pay directly to me, that amount kept changing, when all was seaid and done it would of been half of her ss check, and ihhs would pey me min wage for 60 or so hours a month! well we declined and with drew our aplacation, because we all live together and her part of my pay we would use for her care, so It really was not worth it to us.we live in CA and if we dident live with my moms in law and I was just a person workin for her how would ihss exspect a 88 year old woman to live on 400 a month? I hope what ever stae you live in has programs for you to get hooked up with.

Llynn,

Get ahold of the social worker at the hospital where he receives treatment. My husband had a massive stroke 4 years ago. We are in California and just received medi-cal. I could have gotten it earlier if had known, what, where, and why............call Calif. Department of Health Care Services.....In-Home Operations Section in Sacramento at (916)552-9105. Also, get ahold of HICAP services in the area you are in. This is mandatory............ have your doctor call the case manager in your hospital and tell them it is an emergency to get you help! You HAVE to push, push, push,, scream, cry, whatever it takes. I now have 6 days, 7 hours a day help with a "share of cost". This is so very confusing. God Bless!

I have been taking care of my husband for almost 5 years now. I had a job where I was lucky to take him with me. But now I can't take him and I can't work. He has liver cancer, colon cancer, bladder and limp node cancer. He is at level 4. He goes in for chemo every two weeks and has 3 hours of the chemo and then sent home with a chemo bag for two days. The third day we go back they take it off and we go home. He also has arthritis in every joint. His hands are so deformed that he can't even open a water bottle. He keeps cutting his toes because he trips a lot. All I want to find out, Is there any kind of help. Like, can I get paid to stay home since we can't afford an aid to come here? Can anyone tell me who to call or where to find help. Thank you. LorEll

My husband also had a severe stroke in May took out his entire right ventricle of the brain. He was in a nursing home for about 60 days and medicare paid for that, but now he is in a memory care unit and requires fulltime round the clock care. Do you have any long term care insurance? We do and I am using that for now, but it has a cap on it, and he could very well outlive the cap which does worry me. You need a break, I cared for my husband for 5 years at home 24/7 and I too hired someone 4 hours a week to come in while I ran to the grocery etc. It was so wearing on me, (he also suffers from 2 neurological diseases). I can only imagine how exhaustede you are. You need help, check to see if in your area there are agencies that can help. We have one that did help a little, we are in California, only some counties have it. I have a friend in Ohio and she gets a lot of help from the state and county to care from her sister. Check with social services to see if there is help for you. You are in my prayers too. One question, does your husband suffer from agitation periods as a result of the stroke? mine does and they can be very aggressive and go on for several hours a day.

GO TO THE DEPARTMENT OF REHABILATION WEB SITE, TO SEE IF THERE IS ONE IN YOUR AREA. IF THERE IS ONE CALL THEM AND MAKE AND APPOINTMENT TO EVALUATE YOUR MOTHER TO SEE IF SHE QUALIFIES FOR THE PROGRAM. I THINK THERE IS A AGE LIMIT THOUGH. IF SHE QUALIFIES THE AMOUNT OF MONEY YOU WILL RECIEVE FOR TAKING CARE OF HER DEPENDS ON HOW SEVERE THEY DETERMINE SHE IS. ESPCIALLY IF SHE IS WHEELCHAIR BOUND AND CANNOT TRANSFER HERSELF TO THE BED OR ANYWHEHE. GOD BLESS,I HOPE THIS IFORMATION HELPS YOU.

AND HOW TO GET AROUND THE HIGH TAX. I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN GET PAID THROUGH SOME AGENCY OR THE STATE SINCE SHE DOES HAVE MONEY. I DON'T WANT TO KEEP TAKING ALL HER MONEY.

June 03, 2010

Hello Dear Sister! I hope that you get a chance to read this message and I pray for both yourself and husband. There is financial, and caregiver support available and the VERY FIRST place to start is your local Social Service Office.

Also, you can ask social services (APPLY 4 MEDICAID & MEDICARE PARTS A & B) to help you locate "The Commission for the Aging" in your town to assist. I've done this in order for me to learn how to better care for my mother who has early state Dementia. In fact, I'm BLESSED that my mom will be living with me soon (moving out of NY State Nursing Home).

If you need In-Home Care Givers (AT YOUR HOME)YOUR SOCIAL SERVICE DPT can and will help with your finances such as (a) Meals on Wheels, (b)Food Stamps, (c)ADULT DAY CARE CENTER MONDAY THRU FRIDAY PAID VIA MEDICAID and (d)CAREGIVER SUPPORT GROUP MEETINGS to name a few!!!

If you like, Ma'am you can also reach me at my personal email address: ladyyawson@gmail.com. or call (717)414-2924 anytime.

It's a pleasure to be of assistance and hope to hear from you.

Very Respectfully,
Anita Yawson

Hi Sandynmesa:

I will be moving to Sun City to care for my elderly parents, who are not well. I conveniently just got laid off in California, but upon moving I will have very little in the way of expenses, as their house is paid for, and they have a car I can use. I understand that in California I could get paid about $11/hour for their care. Can you let me know what the policy is in Arizona? Or, if your company can help me?

Thanks!

wow..I stumbled upon this web site and I've just been sittin here
reading all the post from everyone...to find I'm not alone.
I'm in kinda the same situation as alot of you are. My mom is 83
I'm 50 ..she's gettin to the point where she falls alot...falls asleep
while somethings on the stovetop...she gets confused and it's just
to the point where I have to be here with her. I live here with her
and am her only caregiver. I of course had to take on the responsiblities
of running a home like the yard work and general maintenance..I had to
work two jobs to keep our heads above water.but had to let my night job
go ...because mom can't be alone..especially at night when she's taken her medication. Mom only get social security which is nothing..and I make beans at my job..and they just informed me today they'll be going out of business by August.
Mom does have an account through a reverse mortgage we got for her...but
there's really not much in there but that money is for extreme emergencies..
and would'nt last more than a couple of months anyways if we had to pay for 24 hour care for my mom. She does get Medicare..but I've not looked into benifits for in home care yet..that's my next search...anyways..if anyone knows of benifits in Virgina please let
me know
Thank you and God bless you all

for momola

A lot of the answer to your question depends on your Mothers income and what type insurance she has. Also where she lives determines if you can get paid or not. Let me know if you find an answer
