I will began caring for a dear friend in her 50s tomorrow.  I can only stay 4 hrs in afternoon.  Husband works and just beginning to face care issues with her.  She has had it about 4 yrs.I am trying to assess her need and try to find inexpensive help for her.  Any place to go?

Look into Adult Day Care in your/her area.  Some have shuttles that pick-uo and drop off the person.

Your local senior center, council on aging, social workers, etc  can give you leads and /or literature on caregiving services.

Hiring though an agency is another way to get a caregiver.  In my area they are $25. -$27. phr., but they only make about $8 phr.  So after you find a good one through an agency, you can ask if they will work outside of the agency, and pay them more then the agency pays them.  The agency screens them, including criminal background checks.

Churches sometimes have people willing to do caregiving, but you need to check out there references and a criminal background check through the police dept.

Also when bringing in outsiders, remove valuables, money, statements, checks, credit cards, jewelry, etc.  Some install a nanny cam.

When I had to go into the hospital for cancer surgery, I had to hire 24/7 caregivers for my 93 yr old mother with AD.  I gave mom's jewelry box, our checks, and files for credit cards and bank statements to a friend.  The house next to ours was vacant and I have the keys.  I moved all our liquor over there.  I just didn't want to put temptation in front of them.
