Hello, everyone! This is my first post. My mother has AD and I am having more and more trouble getting her to go to the doctor or to any medical appointment. She's never liked the medical profession. Luckily (or maybe because she's avoided doctors most her life?), she is very healthy except for the Alzheimer's. Last time I brought her to her doctor's appointment, she would not get out of the car once we got to the medical clinic. I got the doctor's medical assistant to help me. She was able to convince my mother to go inside the clinic and the waiting room to wait for her appointment. The doctor ordered a blood panel. Now, again I'm faced with having to get my mother to go to the lab. Unless I tell her something like "We're going out for lunch," she won't even get into the car. So I can trick into getting into the car (we actually do go out to eat after), but once I'm there, she won't budge. She sits and insists she is "not going." Has anyone had this problem? Any ideas?

Have not had this problem.  Am wondering what is triggering her?  Is she aware that it is the doctor's office when she arrives?  Is it dislike of this particular doctor?  Or is she confused about where she is and scared and wants to mask that be staying in the car?  Can you "bribe" her with something she enjoys - like "we'll go out to lunch after we see the doctor, but only if you cooperate with him/her"?

IF your mother recognizes where she is...  don't say too much....park the car, get out... walk around the other side... help her get out of the car, and instruct her to "Come with me Mom".

If she says she doesn't want to get out of the car try one of the following:

1.  Come with me Mom.. this will only take a minute and I don't want you to stay in the hot/cold/damp car alone!

2.  Come with me Mom... you have to SIGN a paper that the doctor needs for his records.

3.  (Have a small basket for the staff")   Come with me Mom so we can DELIVER this treat to the office staff.   ITs  "Appreciation week" for the staff

4. Tell her YOU need to see the doctor... can she come with YOU for moral support?

5. Have one of the staff MEET you outside, and have them ASK her in for a minute.

I am sure there are TONs of other suggestions, but if ALL else fails....

6. have the DOCTOR write a letter asking her to come in to discuss her records, whatever.   BEFORE the appointment.   Then gently remind her that 'we don't want to waste the doctor's time' so lets just see what he wants and we can go to lunch/for icecream... etc.

I have used one or two of these myself, when Mother doesn't want to go to the doctors, since "she is fine"

I hope they work for you too!
