My father who is 89 has state 7 dementia.  He lives with my mom (82) about 20 minutes from my home.  My dad's general health is pretty good.  He attends Alzheimer's Adult Day Services 3 times a week which gives my mom a respite.  My mom has a bulging disk and other problems that limits her ability to walk for any distance.  Our problem is he is fine during the day but at night after dinner he gets all dressed up and says he has to go out.  He can become very arguementive and we are unable to stop him.  His personality changes in the evening and my mother cannot contol him.  They live in Leisure World community and several times my mother has had to call securty to look for him.  Is there any medication he can be given to slow him down in the evenings to calm him.   If this continues my mom will have to put  him in  a home.  Hiring a "companian" would not be the answer because he wants to leave at all times.

Hi karintina,  A friend of mine's dad took to walking at night.  They found that by taking him on long walks during the day, he didn't feel the same need to go out at night.  Is there someone who could try that with him and see how it works.   Personnally I find 'medication' a bit scary.   Good luck!
