My father has primary dementia and has been taking Aricept.  With insurance, the cost of the med each month is $ 166.00.  Is there another cheaper alternative to this?  There are probably many that don't take it b/c of its cost.

Hi Herbie,

This is what my mom’s Doctor shared with me, “no medicine available has high results rate, therefore Aricept and possible other medicines will only at best slow the disease down if at all”. It is up to you and your family to decide what is best to keep him on this at this cost. I was in your situation about a year ago; I choose to take my mom off of Aricept because of financial restraints of $90.00 per refill. A Insurance representative called me and shared a plan call WellCare(Health Spring); it is based on an individual’s income, and now she pays on $15.00 per refill of Aricept and other medications are at no or little cost. You may consider shopping around for an alternative health insurance. Hope this helps.

Bless Your Spirit!

Thanks, RevYarb for the insight into Aricept.  Sad to hear that it may not help slow down the progression.  My father is divorced and alone.  He's very eligible and has seen three women since last year.  All have come to realize, though, that he's got memory loss and they don't want to deal with it.  It such a horrible disease.  I'll call the insurance company and find out why it's so expensive.  Chances are there is a deductible before they pay more.  I will look up Wellcare on the internet to see how he can qualify.  I sure wish they'd find a cure as I am now dealing with a grandmother that has it (I pay her bills in the nursing home) and now a father.  My grandmother is running out of money and cannot qualify for Medicaid - land in her name; can't get it out.   Luckily, they are the passive type, so that helps.  It has been really hard over the past year of dealing with a divorce of my father (actually my father in law), the realization that he's losing his memory at a young 69 years old and that his mother is still living at 94 with no signs of passing.    So much to look forward to...

Hi,

I got my mom on public aide and she takes aricept also, it only costs her $ 2 - $ 4 for her prescriptions. I was also told social security can help with prescription costs. Good luck
