My mother is 67 and in the last few years, her drinking has gotten out of control. We are now being told that she is in the late stages of chronic alcoholism. She is in the hosptial right now and her doctor is detoxing her and trying to flush out her liver because her ammonia levels are really high. We have found a treatment center for her and, if she passes the phone interview with them, she will go there for 30 days. This will be her first attempt at getting help. My poor father has been through the ringer and my sister and I are concerned and frustrated. I don't really have any questions, I just found this site and would appreciate any suggestions or support. Thanks
Hey smilin',
First of all, welcome to Caring.com. I'm really glad you found us.
I know it's tough, but I'm happy for you that your mom is consenting to go to a treatment center. I'm hopeful, as cliche as it sounds, the day she enters is the first day of the rest of her life. I'm also hopeful you'll find support here.
Take care and keep us updated.
Hi Stillsmilin !
I have been through a very similar situation with my mom. We almost had to resort to an "involuntary commitment" to get her into a treatment facility. She fought and refused until the very last moment but thankfully, she finally agreed.
It was the best move we all could have made. The treatment center focused on the AA program and to our amazement, my mom took the program. We made sure she had transportation to the local meetings as soon as she left the treatment center and she has now been sober for 20 months!! I would also highly recommend finding a local Al-Anon group for yourself. It's for those who have a family member or close friend who is an alcoholic. I found it to be a great source of support. You can go here to find a local group near you:
http://www.al-anon.alateen.org/meetings/meeting.html [alateen.org]
You can also call the number on the website b/c not all the groups are listed there (my local one wasn't).
How are things going right now? Was your mom admitted to the treatment program? Please feel free to post and update us anytime! I have definitely been there.
