How do you plan for your visits?
I have this very dated picture in my mind of what a visit to the doctor is supposed to be like: long, slow, intimate, a bit like seeing an old, wise friend. (I worked in my grandfather's office when I was a kid and it felt like that to me.)
However, I know now from seeing my childrens' doctor, that the best visits are planned - more like a meeting.
I try to think about specific examples, concerns, things I've seen since the last visit. And, I write an agenda of sorts - things I want to cover, questions I have. Then, I take notes. I make sure I understand any terms she uses.
I feel better after a visit like this - like I've been a partner in getting good care.
What are your frustrations with visits to the doctor? How do you get the information you need? How do you ask the hard questions? Make the most of your 15 minutes?
