My father was diagnosed about 9 months ago. He also had a very slight stroke at the time. He now tells everyone that the reason he is so forgetful or can't walk as well is because he had the stroke and refuses to discuss or acknowledge Alzheimer. The doctors told my Mom he has to stop driving and she is telling him next week when they return from vacation.

Hi Tweety,
Such a difficult situation. My guess is that your father is fearful of any possible stigma attached to being an Alzheimer's patient and is resisting such a label. Perhaps a discussion with his doctor over what terms to use and how to talk to your father could help your mother with caring for him.
Best wishes,
Laura

Hi Tweety,
Welcome to Caring's groups. I'm really glad you posted.
It's not the same as my dad does not have Alzheimer's, but he often only recalls a portion if anything of what a doctor has told him and ends up telling folks all kinds of crazy information. He was once hospitalized for a horrid UTI, which called illness induced temporary dementia. Even though we've told him numerous times what caused him to be so sick and hospitalized, he will continue to tell anyone that asks about that period of time, "They STILL don't know why I got so sick." Yes, they and we do. I can only imagine that this is worse with Alzheimer's.
Perhaps the next time your dad has an appointment with a doctor he's comfortable and familiar with, he/she can have a discussion with him about his Alzheimer's diagnosis. This may take a phone call from your mom prior to that appointment, but it may be worthwhile.
Best of luck. I know this isn't easy.
