- My Caring

My husband, who has had PD for about 20 years, at first showed a fine tremor in his left hand. He complained of pain and stiffness in his shoulder and his left arm hung slightly bent and did not swing. Mostly, he was so slow at doing anything! I read a short piece about Parkinson's, determined he probably had it, and I was right.
My husband has had PD for many years, and I remember the early signs. They are just as you listed.
spouse has all these .even though he was diagnosed 33 months ago.he is very stiff ,drools ,falls, slurred speech, needs help with grooming, takes long time to eat,is these common with only 33 months with p.d.
The 10 different signs to look for in Parkinsons disease is great advice for me.
i HAD SYMPTOMS 1,3,4,10 AT LEAST 2 YRS. BEFORE THE TREMOR STARTED IN MY LEFT ARM. ONLY THEN WAS PARKINSON'S SUGGESTED TO ME. i WASN'T EVEN RETIRED YET! i'VE HAD SPEECH THERAPY AND AM STILL ON ROPINEROLE AND SELEGELINE. i DRAG MY FEET; HIGH STEP-UPS ARE DIFFICULT; BODY ACHES, STIFFNESS. HANDWRITING GETTING SMALLER BUT STILL PROGRESSION HAS BEEN FORTUNATELY SLOW. NEXT YEAR I WILL BE 70 SO I HOPE I STAY RELATIVELY ACTIVE.
1/2 of these symptoms are not necessarily indicators of Parkinson's. the tremour is obvious, but declining olfactory sense, clumsiness, slowness,-some signs would lead me to think of a stroke...
Honestly, the items in this checklist are pretty broad. How many of us over fifty, feel stiffness or trip. How many, given the current economy, feel sad or low on energy. Be careful when observing such tips and being quick to diagnose. Some of these may result from depression and other items maybe due to arthritis (changes in handwriting).
A classic symptom not mentioned is what is called, wearing "the mask". This was the first symptom noted for my Mom 11 years ago. We would repeatedly ask her if she was mad, or upset, as her face was seemingly frozen with that expression. She would always say no. It was not until her gait diminished to a shuffle that we took her to the doctor and found out she had Parkinsons. The doctor remarked one of the classic initial symptoms is "the mask".
Iam a caregiver the lady I care for, is 87 has sevl health problems. The latest has been her arms and hands jerk and her legs when she is in bed
I wish I'd had this checklist years ago. The first thing I noticed was that my husband's right arm didn't swing naturally when he walked. It was always bent slightly at the elbow and just hung lifelessly. His speech was so soft at times and, when I would ask him to repeat something, he would do so but it would still be very soft. It was just in the last year or so that I connected that to PD.
