It's important here to note that even if your parent has several of these symptoms they may not have Alzheimer's. In fact, many people have a half dozen of these symptoms who are perfectly normal. The more powerful symptoms - forgetting family members names, unable to recall common everyday words, stopping in the middle of a brief activity, like baking a cake and forgetting to go back...if many of these symptoms occur OFTEN, there may be a problem. Being forgetful, careless or disoriented is common in teenagers. Be careful not to over diagnose your parents or grandparents!

I'm 67 years old. My mother's body died in 2003; her mind had died long, long before. You seem to address all your articles to caregivers. What about us? The people who are actually in danger of showing the first symtoms? I try not to worry about it but every lapse terrifys me. There are more people now who are nearing Alzheimers age. Educate us!! We are not stupid and completely dependent on our children.

The thoroughness of this article made me feel prepared to almost "test" my parent/loved one for signs I may have otherwise overlooked when thinking of Alzheimers. I may take a look at her checkbook or ask her to complete an activity. I may ask more specific questions about her involvement in certain activities that are commonplace in her life. Having this list definitely made me feel more proactive in making my own assessment of how significant her signs are.
