Sarah is right on. We tend to focus on glucose, yet pay less attention to blood pressure and cholesterol control.
In a few years time, we will see the cardiovascular benefits of the ADVANCE trial which now showed 21% reduction in kidney complications. If we are protecting the kidneys, we are protecting the heart. Much like the UKPDS (the United Kingdom Prospective Diabetes Study) showed the benefits to the hert many years after the initial reports were released, it is speculated that the ADVANCE will have similar end-point. Glucose control IS good for the heart. Don't ditch those glucose monitors!
