While most of this article was helpful, I have actually heard that giving potted plants in some instances is not good because of the bacteria that can be in the soil. I'm not sure why this would be actually, being a microbiologist myself, most soil bacteria are Nitrobacter or Nitrosomonas, which are actually "soil-enriching" bacteria, as they are nitrogen fixers. They are not pathogenic to humans.

Two Christmases ago, I gave my mother the DVD, "Planet Earth". She absolutely loves it. She says she gets to see places and animals that she would never see in her lifetime.
Even after 2 years, she still watches it and talks about it.
fyi, there is also a wonderful new movie, "Earth" coming out on Earth Day, April 22. Previews look great!
