My father - a Korean War Vet passed away in November 2009, leaving my mother widowed with only Social Security Benefits to live on. My mother's health has been fairly good until recently and now she needs some in home assistance to help with her daily activities. My question: does she qualify for any type of assistance from the VA to help pay for in home care?

Hi, I have a few questions. My dad is a 90 year old disabled vet from WWII. He recently was diagnosed with an aggressive form of cancer that is ravaging his body with pain and weakness. My 84 year mom is unable to care for him 24/7 and we are not able to be there 24/7 either. On July 4th we moved him to a full care facility, which is very expensive and will delete their meager savings rapidly. Are there any benefits available to help them reduce this expense? He is currently in hospice care, but we have to pay for the facility out of pocket. My second question- Is mom eligible for his 60% disability check after my dad passes? If so, how does she apply for that? Are there other benefits for my mom or dad that we should be aware of? Thanks so much for any information you can provide. Have a good day, Lisa

i am a 44 year old female--never married. Can I get veterans benefits, or is it just for spouses? My father passed away several years ago. He was in the Vietnam war and worked with agent orange. We believe that it caused some health problems for him, and quite possibly some for me, because I was born after he returned from the war.

I need a service that helps families of veterans that are not wartime veterans, but have still served their country. My husband died in 2016. I took care of him from time of his illness to the time of his death. Now I am homeless and my daughter's section 8 is being taken away, even though her father put her name on the lease and the voucher for the section 8. I am physically disable and my daughter only works part time. Trying to help me and her younger brother. She needs that section 8 back, in order to help pay for the, which is $1,500.00. With the section 8 her rent was $550.00, of which I paid $275.00 and she paid $275.00. Right now she owes almost $8,000.00 in back rent. Please help! We need that section.

I can not find any information on a subject I often question. my dad & mom were not married at the time I was born 3/20/48 they wed on 6/9/49. I was raised until his death without his last name, then the lawyer refused to recognize me as his legit, child the 4 younger kids all got monthly checks until they turned 18 -. I never receive a cent, I was told this could be corrected. I have cancer and have had to have 30 radiation treatment and it is time for me to see if I will start Chemo soon or have to have more surgery then chemo. IF it is true that I am entitled to funds they would greatly solve some of my problems. Judy Metts

My husband has Parkinson's that was diagnosed in 2008. VA claims it was not due to Agent Orange. He has not seen any doctors at the VA to determine this diagnosis. He is being treated by a neurologist at the University of Florida Movement Center. According to the VA he does not have the correct diagnosis to qualify. After a fall in October 2014 he was put in a rehab facility. After 2 months the ,facility decided he had plateaued and would be moved to a long term unit. The original cost $2400.00 was adjusted to $6000.00. At that point, he was moved to a 12x12 room that housed 2 adult men. At that point he was not receiving any type of skilled nursing. According to the facility he did not qualify for skilled nursing. I had been told by the business office, if he reached 60% or higher in compensation his fees would be retroactively changed back to the lower amount. It was determined in April 2014 that his disability was 70%. On May 28, 2015 I paid $20,000.00 to the facility. On July 27, 2015 my husband was released from the facility based on the fact "I want to go home." The social worker on the case said he "does not have dementia." She claimed he was perfectly fine. This release was 3 days after I was told he was being released.. According to the law, 30 days notice is required. He has been in .an assisted living facility since he was released. And now I am being told he needs long term care and the cost has jumped back to $6,000.00 per month. Now I don't know what to do as VA says he does not have the right Parkinson's,s. I need someone to explain this. As I stated earlier, he has not been seen by a neurologist from VA. I have been told determination is done by non doctors. Just like the social worker who decided my husband does not have dementia! Please lead me to someone who can help.

I'm trying to help a close friend that has no one at he wants to move in with me so I can care for him I feel so bad he's not in a good place and I want to help him! I just don't understand why the VA would let him live the way he does instead of letting me who he trusts he suffers from ptsd among other things and is paranoid let me take care of him and pay me a small stipend heck I don't even need much. But nope has to be family so what happens when the vet has no family yeah really great but I'm going to do it for free because he needs help. So no offense but that's just so sad when the vet has no voice as to who cares for him after he's lost all trust in the VA..I'm starting to agree with him on that. Let our govt send you to war use you up and when you come home damaged they don't care. I'm so hurt right now....

I was perminatly medically retired from the Army about a year ago. I just noticed this on my VA letter: You are not considered to be permanently disabled due to your service-connected disabilities at this time because you are scheduled for a future reduction in rating on: some time in June. What does this mean? I thought that if I was permanently medically retired from the Army that I would receive the full VA amount until retirement age. Is this not the case?

I have mold in my home, I have a vehicle with no reverse, and even my roof leaks and the carpets all mold. Coming home after years of giving up my life I came home to help Mom she's 61. I don't get any help, VA gives me medical though so I'm grateful. Vets benefits are so abused today that the ones of us that need it can't get it. You would probably run if you seen how I live but I have no choice and my body wont let me move. Next time you think you have something to complain about think about us vets we give up everything and most people say they remember when they already forgot us.

Mr. Mathews, my father passed on July 25th, 2013. He was a serviceman in I believe 1951. I will not get into the whole story right now but he got a honorable discharge but situation back then he was put in a tank as were all the men but my Dad was affected by this and went into a coma. He had asthma I know from then on so bad he was close to death a few times until technology I guess got a little better every few years they would come up with different meds. I'm not exactly sure what the day was that he decided to try to get his his and not sure what it is called his Army Pension so he got an attorney. The attorney told him sure I can help you and my Dad brought him his papers which he had all that he needed. A while went by and the attorney calls to say in so many words no the army says we ain't doing anything for you. This went on and he did get a few attorneys and they all said the same basically but at first they were all shocked to see all of his paperwork and said yes we can help. Let. My Dad went on but asked me to continue his fight he said there were some of his friends that were in the army to and got pensions due to alcohol, and one said he was mental but daddy says he sure didn't seem mental but that was just an example. What if anything can I do. He even told them that he knew that it was going back pretty far so they could start it from the day he stepped into his office.

Who do I talk to about my 67 year old brother who is a Vietnam Vet? He suffered a stroke over a year ago. At first he was in the VA here in Leavenworth, Ks and then transferred to the Medical Lodge here in town. His x-wife has been handling most of his issue. I left my name encase of any changes. Today I went to visit him and found out that they had transferred him to Gardner Kansas an hour away from Leavenworth. I ask why and how come I wasn't notified. They gave me no reasonable answer. I called his x-wife and she told me that they didn't notify her either and she thought they did it because she complain to the nursing home about his care. Can someone help me with this.

My brother filed for his VA benefits; but there was a problem with his last name. For what ever reason he started using my mom's last name instead of my dad's. When he was in the military he used my dad's name; when he got of the military he started using my mom's last name. When he got his first VA benefits check it was in the name he used when he enlisted and he sent the check back. The VA never sent him that money back. He filed to change his last name back to his enlisted name; he got this done one month before he passed away but didn't get a change to turn that paper work in because he was to ill. And he begged for a VA patient advocate to come to visit him so that he could turn the paper work in while he was in the VA hospital but they never visited him. He died without receiving his benefits. When I claimed his body he had left me a note for me to turn in his paper work. I did not have power of attorney. What happened to the money he first received and then turned back in because of the error in his last name?

Hello tetotwo, I am sorry to hear of the dental issues you are experiencing. It may be best if you contact your local Veterans Administration office. They may be able to assist you in determining what coverage you may be entitled to. To find your local VA office: www.va.gov. For dental you may also want to look into other low cost dental options that is outlined here: http://www.caring.com/questions/dental-care-for-low-income. If I can direct you to additional resources, please let me know.

My Dad just recently passed on Christmas Day 2013. He served active duty in the Army Guard for five months in 1962. He served in the Guard from I believe 1961-1971. Does or did he not qualify any benefits or a check from the VA? Or one that his wife or kids could still file for even for him serving his country to help support his wife or offset some bills? Did his oldest son or wife not deserve a U.S. flag to be present to one of them at his funeral even though it was the Army Guard? To me as his daughter he was still willing to give his life for his country if needed and should be honored in some way I believe. Though this is my step mom and perhaps she should have asked about the military honors if he had any rights or honors for what time he did serve in the Army Guard if not is there any way my father could still be honored in some way if he due this for my brother to receive the flag in his honor for he is the oldest of all of us. Please this is a very deep situation and my step mom said she had checked on the benefits before and he didnt qualify but she never had the correct information. I believe my dad has been denied some of his rights that were due to him. Pls contact me asap. Thank you.

I had applied for VA hospice but it wasn't approved yet before his passing. I just learned he was in Vietnam and Korea. Never knew this before. Does he receive any benefit for this? Or is there something I could get because he served there? Or should I be looking for benefits or insurance from this? I am just unsure.

My name is Leonard in Hedgesville, WV. I served in the US Navy as a submariner for over 10 years. I have several service connected disabilities total rating at 40%. Recently my compensation pay has been garnished to payback my severance pay in 2005. I was honorably discharged in April 2005 under RE-3B family separation. I became a single father of 3 children all under the age of 3 (twins and a baby). Because I didn't complete my enlistment contract all the bonus money I received had to be paid back. My severance pay, leave pay, one month's base pay, and half of my tax return the following year was garnished. My orders were to transfer to a civilian in 10 days. 10 days to get my affairs in order and become a civilian. I lost my home, home goods, vehicle, and more. I had to pay greater than $26,000.00 dollars and if it wasn't for my parents, my children and I would be homeless. Now, as of 6 August 2013, my 40% compensation is being garnished to pay a severance pay I never received. I do not have a job currently but it is in the process. I graduated from college obtaining my BA but that was 5 months ago so I have had no income and now I am behind 2 months' rent and 4 months electric bill. My children and I are about to be homeless again and everything lost. I don't know where to go or what to do to prevent this. My wife left me and the kids and the Navy kicked me out and severely damaging my credit and lost everything and now it haunts me again. I am in physical pain every day and I am far from lazy. It is not fair and I need something to happen soon. I do start employment next week but I am too far behind. Please, is there anyone that can help? I have asked many sources (VA, charities, and various more) to aid in my time of need. Please help, Leonard

He had at least 2 surgerys on his prostate & throat. They have also found spots on his brain too. All of this was caused by agent orange & he is 100% connected. When he finally received some benefits he got a check for back pay, i recently found out that i received some back pay also when he claimed me as a dependant years ago. I recently found out i received benefits as a child & while i attended school. I learned about this while reading about agent orange & the affects it may have on offspring online. Now my father becomes violent towards me,has loss of memory a lot. The new law that only helps Disabled vet caretakers for vets after September 11, 2001. It is disgusting, it makes no sense why only disabled vets that got hurt after sept 11 2001 there are alot of non progfit groups that will onlt help disabled vets if they were injured after sept 11 2001 why? ive been injured since 1995 and in a wheelchair and thankfully my brother takes care of me 24/7 and he cant get help because i was injured before sept 11 2001. Ive seen so many disabled vets that has been injured before sept 11 2001 that need help but we are being treated separate and looked at as if we arent disabled and dont need help at all. There are alot of non profit programs that could and should help all disabled veterans no matter when they became disabled.

my husband served for 20 years in the army, he retired as a MSG 1989. he was in vietnam and was hit with AGENT ORANGE, every day while there. My husband died of brain cancer this year 04/27/2012. He had 20% diability on his retirement. When I called the VA in Wichita,ks they were not helpful at all. I talked to a guy by the name of George, he sent me booklets on health, but we were already in Wesley there and my husband was dieing, I asked about hospice in the VA hospital and was told we would be put on a list. REALLY? My husband was already dieing I was told by our insurance that we had until the 25th of April or the insurance would run out. I tried so hard to get this guy to help us, he acted like no big deal he couldnt do it. So now since my husband is passed. I dont want this uncaring to continute, my husband served 20 years for what?? No one could help us. So what is the point of 20 years!!!!Am I angry? You bet! Now can I file something to complain about all of this bad care, and caring. Plus how about Agent Orange! Where can I file for that, my husband deserves something for his time in service. I am heart broken, he was so proud to be a Vet, I didnt have the heart to tell him how they deserted him in his time of need. Thank you for listening to me vent. Please dont have that George call me, he doesnt care.

I served 3 years during the Vietnam war. I'm now unemployed and can't get work. Do I qualify for any assistance now? If not when I turn 65 what am I eligible for? Are there Grants to help with expenses?

Hey everybody, I am in the Ohio army national guard, well for the next 7 days until my contract is up. I was given the opportunity to extend my contract for a deployment to afgan and decided to deny the extension: at first, and then I saw all my buddies getting ready to deploy and decided to extend to be with them and realized I was not ready to leave the guard. I did except the extension for the deployment back in sept of 2011 and was all ready to leave with my guys. I was in mississippi awaiting take off and was never picked up by any company to deploy. I asked and asked and did all I could on my part to go with my people. Come to find out the only reason I didn't get to go with my guys was because a capt christy commander of the 237th g unit outa medina just didn't sign any of my paper work. So here all my efforts to go overseas with my guys was squashed because a commander didn't do his job. I have volunteered for any and every deployment and am willing to do anything. I want to resign and stay in the army guard. I don't want to get out. I had a meeting with the capt who is the acting commander for the unit and was told that "politics" say I have to get out because I denied the first (desp) extension, even though I did sign the extension and I did have an officer sign it and I do have the original stil. This is all ridiculous, here I am being pushed out and I'm begging to stay in. I did make some mistakes in 2008 in kuwait while deployed and going to wlc, but I paid for that mistake and have strived very hard to make up for my mistakes. Please ill do anything in the world. Anything. If there is anywhere I can be directed to make this right please help me.

I am 100% total and permeant disabled gulf war vet. I live in a two story home and need a one level ranch do to my disabilities. I have bad credit because I worked one day and literally I was not able to ever work again. Does the Va. buy homes and help fid homes suitable for my handicap?

I am a Viet Nam vet, and live on a pension of 985 dollars per month. The VA is nearly USELESS except for this.I need teeth pulled, and the bastards refuse to help me out. If I do ANY work, I am docked dollar for dollar. They pay just enough so I don`t qualify for food stamps or public assistance, and my bills are nearly equal to my income. It sucks to be a disabled vet. Screw the VA.

Thank you for the informative article about benefits for veterans. It was well presented and easy to understand. Many veterans qualify for and need benefits but do not know how to find the information or apply. We ask lots of our veterans and they give a lot. Many are injured, many die. As a country we should do all we can to help veterans obtain the benefits they deserve. When a veteran is wounded he/she lives with that disability for their entire life. We should remember that sacrifice and give veterans what we have promised.

My husband was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease at age 55. He served in the Navy during Vietnam. He was stationed in the Gulf of Tonkin. He has been denied VA benefits because he never "officially" touched land. Agent Orange was airborne! How can the VA deny his claim? With the wind stream, it is impossible that he was NOT exposed. Are there other Veterans diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease who served on the USS Gridley stationed at North SAR (Search and Rescue) off the coast of Hai Phong, Gulf of Tonkin? I am hoping to build an appeal. Thank you for any assistance. I noticed this statement on the VA website from a viewer: "The VA also has a list of ships that visited Viet Nam or were stationed at Yankee station and enjoyed the down wind spraying of the north. This information is still kept from the Citizens as privileged info. The vet service officers should make it public now." Any knowledge of this claim could be very helpful.

A V.A. Death Pension is a monthly payment made to very low-income surviving spouses (who have not remarried), or minor or permanently disabled children, of deceased veterans who served in time of war. Eligibility for a V.A. Death Pension depends on both the deceased veteran and the survivor meeting certain criteria. The deceased veteran must meet two conditions. The veteran must have been discharged from service under other than dishonorable conditions. The veteran must have served at least 90 days of active military service, at least one day of which was during an official period of war. If the veteran entered active duty after September 7, 1980, he or she must have served at least 24 months, or the full period for which called or ordered to active duty.
