your advice to see your doctor sounds like a good idea, except it doesn't work that way .If you call and ask to see your doctor you are told that the doctor can't see you until whatever date they have open.NO MATTER WHAT!

I think these articles are all very well, but if you have the same poor quality doctor I have you will probably just be prescribed HRT or anti-depressants despite having all the indicators for potential heart trouble AND several of these symptoms. Basically doctors don't care about women over 30! If you present with this article you will most likely be accused of being hysterical or obsessive by some trainee who hasn't even read your notes!

I am not sure that anything would have. I experienced this exact scenario approximately 6 months ago. It's amazing how you can have all that going on but not believe or completely recognize what it is that's happening. I waited three days through pretty tough symptoms but wasn't convinced it was a heart attack. The third day I finally called the paramedics and went to ER where I promptly received blood test, ekg, followed by a cardiac cath and stent in my right aorta to open a 70% blockage. Thank God I went that third day. I find myself experiencing similar symptoms now and have not as yet acted on it. Since they are the ones that led up to the attack I won't be calling the paramedics, but I am however going to call my cardiologist first thing Monday morning. Thank you very much.

I am a 62 year old woman. The problem with this list is that I have all these symptoms often and for many years, Indigestion , fatigue, muscle pain, anxiety. You name it. Since peri-menopause and menopause during the last ten years, I have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia, and have experienced many other menopausal symptoms which made me feel at the time that I must be having a heart attack. I was not as extensive tests confirmed. How the hell will I know if I am having a heart attack if the list of symptoms is as broad and as vague as they are described here?

Unless you've taken CPR training (Red Cross for instance), you might not know some of these things. Due to CPR I took 30+ years ago, I recognized my husband's heart attack for what it was....the indigestion, tightness in the chest and aching by the shoulder blade were his symptoms -- of silent ischemia. Not all heart attacks look like what we see in the movies! Also, most women don't complain loudly enough to our doctors! Don't be a "whiner" or they'll think we're always "crying wolf" but, if we feel there's a problem, MAKE SOME NOISE in your doctor's office! They aren't mind-readers (contrary to what they might think) and, if they don't listen to you, it's time to find another doctor, ladies! I also had to be my Mom's advocate for both her stroke and heart attack. Important to learn your family history, too!

Yes this was very helpful. My breast cancer has returned after eight years of
being cancer free after having my left breast removed. This time it came back
on the same side but in the chest wall. After 33 treatments of radiation, I have
been waiting to see if the treatments helped but am very worried because the
treatment had to be so very close to my heart. I have wondered what the symptoms would be if I was in danger of a heart attack and you answered my unspoken question. Thank you. When I asked the doctor he said to wait and see how the radiation did before we get into that. So thank you again, it was a big help to me. Dove

Completely, as a woman I've experienced these signs since I was young. Doctors would explain that being female was a protection and these signs were not regarded as a potential threat. This explains eventhough the damage has been done. All I can do now is seriously take the advise of my cardiologist.

I am glad this article is available. I had a heart attack 3 years ago at age 53. It was totally unexpected and I wish I would have had this information back then. The day of my heart attack, I woke up feeling "off" and absolutely exhausted. I felt like I couldn't take a deep enough breath. Silly me, I thought I was starting to hyperventilate and asked my grown son to bring me a paper bag to breath into! Luckily he was with me, because within a few minutes I suddenly had severe stomach symptoms- vomiting, diarrhea, cramps. Still thought it was the flu- never even thought about a heart attack. Within 10 minutes of getting sick, I knew I was in real trouble and couldn't breath- my son called 911 and within about 5 minutes the paramedics were working on me (our fire department is just a few blocks away, fortunately). I was diagnosed with a "Takasubo Syndrome" heart attack and congestive heart failure. It left me with an abnormal heartbeat and a new respect for my heart! Fortunately, 3 years later and now at age 56, I take heart medicine and manage my congestive heart failure symptoms as best as I can. Articles like this one do us a great service- I am glad for this resource--thank you!

I don't understand how these symptoms can be signs of a heart attack, it is hard to seperate these symptoms to everyday happening. I have experience these symptoms for years. I see my cardiologist on a regular basis. Once I experience these symptoms for months, and I had all kinds of tests done and the doctor couldn't find anything wrong with me. Suddenly the symptom went away and I was fine. Am I missing something or my doctor, believe me , I have had every test know to men for heart attack. So how can I recognize when I am truly having a real heart attack when may doctor cant find anything wrong with me. Today I feel just fine, I don't take any kind of medicine for anything. I was told at one time that I have high blood pressure and high cholesterol. The doctor prescribed medicine for me to take for it, but I never took any medicine for it, and when I went back to the doctor, and he ran blood tests and everything and said that everything was fine, I'm really confused, are the doctors just scamming me about my health. Or am I really at risk for a heart attack. I'am 60 years old.Can you make any sense of this?

I had the shortness of breath for several weeks and very tired. Since I was moving I figured all the packing/lifting was the reason for it. I realized that I wasn't able to walk far without getting out of breath. I went to my Dr. and today had blood work and x-rays done. Waiting for the outcome, hopefully I'll get the results by Monday. Thank you for this most important info.

Women certainly do have differing symptoms. My mom felt out-of-sorts for a few days with moist skin around her neck and forearms off and on. Her lower jaw ached and she chalked that up to needing to see the dentist. She wondered if she should call the doctor but decided against it. When she finally DID get to the emergency room because the shortness of breath started, they determined that she had been in a cardiac emergency for at least 18 hours before she arrested on the ER table. They revived her twice that morning! We all learned from her to NEVER ASSUME anything is 'normal' -- ASK a professional!

Thank you so much for this article. None of which I had heard before. Would like to mention though, that the symptoms of: shoulder/back pain; clammy w/perspiration; shortness of breath; palpatations/rapid heart beat; fatigue due to sleep deprivation; anxiety/trembling/pins & needles in legs and a frightening feeling that all was not well with the world, pre-empted the complete collapse of my nervous system. I could not get out of bed. 3 weeks total rest. 2 years recouperation 'til I felt 'normal' again. No such thing as "only stress" ladies so do be on the alert for this as well. Had I read this article all those years ago, I would definitey gone to my GP earlier - even if it wasn't heralding a heart attack, I would have thought it was and done something sooner. Bless you all!

The ways that women experience heart attack symptoms. Prior to my admission to the hospital over a week ago. I now know that doctors did not ask me the right
questions, while in the emergency room. I had none of your usual symptoms of
heart pain. They relied on my last year records of chronic hypertension which
indicated that I have heart damage and went on that.

Right on! I experienced the extreme fatigue and actually took a nap two or three times this past year. Then, I thought I had a back problem, then difficulty exercising and then even tossing a toy mouse to my cat. My arms ached incredibly and my back hurt. No tests showed anything wrong until I went for the treadmill stress test. I was 52 years old and exercised 3 times per week. 5'3" and 128 lbs. Cholesterol ok, etc. But, I'm a major stress ball and have been treating for depression and anxiety for 10 years or so. DO NOT ignore any of these symptoms. I had the "widow" or "widower maker" artery 98% blocked and am extemely lucky I did not have a heart attack. They put a stent in me and just in time!

Great article!! Every woman should read this..REALLY! I had my heart attack in my 40's. My immediate symptoms were primarily on my right side...my back...then my shoulder and neck. I sat on the edge of the bed and my husband try rubbing my back. My skin hurt. I began to feel the need to go to the bathroom, then I began to feel nauseated. My husband took me to the nearest ER. I walked in..handed the nurse my insurance card and said I think I'm having a heart attack. From that moment they immediatley took me in, laid me down, and started hooking me up to equipment. Just from the way I looked....they knew I was having a heart attack. I don't remember much after that....the attack just got worse. I know they worked on me, I heart the doctor (it was the cardiologist) talk to someone on the phone saying "she is stabilized and will transport to main hospital". I later found out I was taken to where the cardiologist could do an angiogram. Next thing I knew I found I was in intensive care. Fortunately the heart (muscle) did not have severe damage, but anough to knock me down and out for awhile. I seems my heart attack was caused by a SPASM of my heart which interferred with the normal function. That was in 1991. Tests show I had several smaller MI's. Talk to your doctor!!! I was very fortunate....those I saw in those first critical moments LISTENED and took action.

I have a family history of heart disease, high blood pressure, and heart disease. I was at my dr. last month and told him of my pain in my left ard going down to my hand. He never looked at my neck and told me that I had a pinched nerve in my neck and to follow up with another dr. I was soo mad that I went home and never went to see another dr. the pain has since gone and now wondering if I had indeed had a heart attack!!!Makes one wonder!!!

I just had a thorough work-up, but the technician that did the Arterial Doppler, obviously had a faulty stethoscope, it showed the systolic (top number) was 92, she asked if I had low blood pressure and I said I am medicated for high blood pressure! She tried it again, and had the same reading. Now, I am worried that her doppler test might be faulty as well. The cardiac doctor referred to me, is short on words and doesn't say more than a half dozen words during the initial exam, and then the follow-up meeting he said "everything is normal"...yet when I pulled up my report there was actually a report of
'mild' conc LVH diastolic dysfunction" I looked it up and also asked my primary dr. what exactly that means. I have been concerned with a previous EKG that had a printed message of "suggest myocardial infarct"..I thought my referring doctor mentioned this to the Cardiac Specialist but obviously didn't. When mentioning this, all doctors but one, said 'nothing to worry about, probably just the machine' makes errors..Well, after this past Stress Test, (nuclear) that evening I had unusual chest pain going up to my jaw, I mentioned it to the Cardiologist, and it was like he was just saying 'Ho..Hum''...then actualy said " it's very unusual but I've had a few people that said this happened"...but I don't know that it's from the nuclear test. Well, I think this doctor doesn't take women's heart disease as important. I am very worried and do not know what to do next! Please help me with what I should do next. Thank you, Bonnieb73

One morning, I had shortness of breath. I think I had a heart attack that morning, which might have caused me to have heart muscle damage. Now, I have a slow heart beat. The right side of my heart, beats slower than the left. For a while I thought it was sleep apnea. However, I am very thankful to be here. My doctor said someday I might have to have a pacemaker put on. Listen to what your body is telling you....I am a 55 year old women and this happened to me in 2004.

I had a major heart attack (and died) and I've yet to see the symptoms that I exhibited listed in any article, all though my Dr's have told me that it's a fairly common symptom.
I woke up early in the morning and my hands hurt...they ached...at first it was just like a sore ache...it progressively got worse until it was an unbearable pressure. I woke my husband up and he rushed me to the hospital, I still didn't know what was happening, but he did. I coded within 5 minutes of getting to the ER. My husband is a firefighter...so when he felt my hands and feet and they were like ice, and he couldn't get a steady pulse he knew what was happening.
I had just been to the Dr two days before and I was told that I was "healthy as a horse". I've tried to spread the word...no one seems to be listening!!

My mom had a heart attack in April '92. She was helping my dad, but was tired & kept going inside to lay down. Thankfully, my younger sister & her Park Ranger husband stopped in. He recognized the symptoms & she got the care she needed. My dad died of a massive heart attack less than a year later, Feb '93. He was alone & there was no one to do for him what his son-in-law did for mom.

This is such an incredible, potentially life-saving article! I wish I could encourage all women to read it. Every word in it is true. This is from a woman who is only alive because a very intelligent young surgeon saw what was happening and insisted that he be allowed to do a quadruple bypass the next day. It is now nearly ten years afterwards and I am still alive and enjoying life. My only advice for women is to *make* the doctors listen to you, no matter what your age!

I've been feeling the more than usual tiredness (chronic fatigue), weakness, heaviness in my arms and pain (fibromyalgia and lupus), numbness and tingling (neuropathy) and at times coldness. I have been seeing a cardiologist and just had a cardiac cathaterization, but we only found that I had no hardening of the arteries, thinning of the walls, etc. And also have low blood pressure and very low cholesterol, but I do have heart disease in my family. Right now I still feel all of the above and feel queasy most of the time, headaches most of the time, and an overall uncomfortableness all the time. Interesting though--my shortness of breath and irregular heart beats with the flip flopping are not when I exercise. They come out of nowhere. Anyone???

I really started this year out right. On January 28th 2011 I went to emergency room with pain in my left arm. On January 31st, I was having triple bypass surgery.Due to complications, April 1st 2011, I was in the hospital again having two stents put in my heart. Now I am confused, it is April 17th 2011 and I have been having numbness and pain in my chest. Is this normal? I felt real good up until two days ago, now I feel like crap. Can anyone give some advise on this matter, what to expect after stent surgery.

How I wish I could engrave this on all women's minds! It is so true and has the possibility of saving so many women's lives!! The symptoms of my first heart attack went on for two weeks (actually, a lot longer if you count the extreme fatigue) and were ignored because I was ignorant of these symptoms. I'm one fortunate woman to still be here! I had five blockages - they were able to repair four by quad bypass. LISTEN TO YOUR BODY!!

These are all very good "warning signs"! I hope women will take them and use them if they have any of the symptoms for any period of time. The main point is that women's heart attacks are very different from men. This is the main point that we need to make to women. After they "get" that, then we can educate on the symptoms that can mean a heart attack in women.
As a woman who has had several different heart procedures, including a quad -bypass and a pacemaker, I can assure you that every point that has been made here is valid.

i remember when i was on the roal to an attack of some sort. I am a diabetic and my sugar would not drop no matter what i did, drink water, walk move, relax (or at least try). because at the same time my stomach was upset, could not eat, no engery to move much and felt were anxious and stressed. Tried my breathing excercise but they exhaused me and start making me short of breath. Then I started spotting. I thought it was that so waited another day before going to hospital. As my sugar was still elvated. My doctor said i was headed to a stroke or heart attack. I had a block artery. stayed in hospital for three days. The article was a reminder of what I need to watch for. Thank you.

I have been experiencing most of these symptoms for several weeks including heart disease and high blood pressure of both parents.. I made an appointment with my doc, she ran an ekg for a total of three minutes... found nothing and has referred me to Gastro... ??????

I HAVE LIVED WITH CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE SO MANY YEARS. I DON'T BELIEVE I WOULD KNOW IF I WAS HAVING A HEART ATTACK. THE PROBLEM I HAVE IS I CAN BE SITTING STILL AND ALL AT ONCE I FEEL FAINT IF I START MOVING RIGHT AWAY IT WILL PASS.

I can honestly say these symptoms are correct. I had a heart attack " out of the blue".....but what I didn't know was the throat pain I had been having for a couple of months was the beginning of mine.
I am 57 years old ,so if I feel tired I consider my age. Aches and pains are common.
When I was told I was having a heart attack, I told the paramedic he was crazy. No chest pain, no numbness.......it started in my thyroid. Who would have guessed?
I have told everyone I come in contact with ,to please , just for safetys sake , be checked.
