Acupuncture is one form of treatment in traditional Chinese medicine. It is based on the theory that the energy flows in channels or meridians in the body. Acupuncturists alter the flow of energy by inserting thin, disposable, metallic needles into points along the energy meridians (or pathways). Similar methods including finger pressure, cupping with small heated cups, and electro-acupuncture with electrically stimulated needles use the same acupuncture points.

Acupuncture is a safe treatment for stroke survivors. The needles are essentially painless and are well tolerated by most people. Survivors often report relief from long- term symptoms, such as pain, spasticity (spasm), numbness and tingling, bladder problems, and depression. It is important to remember that acupuncture must be combined with standard medical treatment. Also, the effect of acupuncture on the body's immune system is not clear.
