Speech therapy is the treatment of disorders that involve speaking, hearing, writing, reading, and other communication required for the activities of daily living. Speech therapists also teach people to swallow foods and liquids safely.

A speech therapist or speech pathologist works to:

  • strengthen weakened oral muscles through exercises
  • teach methods of basic communication
  • teach a patient and family how to manage a communication or swallowing disorder

My physiatrist doctor ordered speech therapy for me to help my voice primarily. I was not aware that there was anything that could help a progressive disease. I had to search for a therapist as not all therapists did voice therapy. My voice became husky and lower in volume. I was not aware how soft it became as it sounded the same to me. Also..... I will not see any therapist assistant, technician, or anybody who is not a licensed individual.

I was not aware of the fact there are things that can be done to help with voice and swallowing. I am now getting therapy from a licensed therapist not a technician. This was ordered by my PHYSIATRIST (most people do not know what this speciality does).

My husband has parkinsons disease, plus other multiple health issues.M y problem is trying to find foods that he can swallow without choking on them.Sometimes I can get him to eat right sometimes its rough. If you're not watching him he will pocket his food in his mouth and then get sick.I'm at my wits end sometimes trying to get him to eat anything.Even though he is on a g-tube I still try to feed him something especially in the morning,so he can maintain a little weight.
