I'm 60 and I've asked around here in Cincinnati at the cost of Assisted Living apartments and it's really expensive. I only draw $733.00 a month on disability. But my daughter found me a wonderful little apartment that only costs $240 a month, then my electric was just $135 and cable was $125. It's an efficienc, but it's a nice size closet, remodeled bathroom, new carpet, I love it here. They do offer a one and two bedroom too. $350 for the 1 bedroom & $450 for the 2.
You really need to call a hospital that has social workers, if you don't have anyone to help you like a family member, and the social workers will help you find a low cost apartment. That's what they're paid to do.
Laundry here costs $1.00 to wash and $1.25 to dry. And I don't have that much laundry. I wash my gowns and undies and dry them on hangers on the shower bar. They have a couple snack machines, so if I run out of pop or want a snack they have that here too.
But to the commenter who said she/he was nervous, gets confused, etc. Don't feel bad. I do too. But since my daughter found me this place I'm a lot happier. I believe the confusion is from my Fibromyalgia, which causes me to get something they call brain fog. I quit driving 20 yrs ago because of this brain fog & I get dizzy spells. I had a really bad car accident and I just felt the best thing to do was to depend on others to drive me, till I get well. And I'm a strong believer in Jesus Christ. I'm seeking him daily to heal me.
Don't give up hope. Pray in the morning, afternoon and evening. Seek God and he will answer you. He promises to deliver(RESCUE) us in our time of need. Read the book of Psalms and believe it. King David had problems and he always turned to the Lord for help.
Psalms 25:20 O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.
My late fiancé who would write a prophecy newsletter every day told me to read Psalms 31 & 91. That helped me so much when I was all alone. The Jews will read a shortened version of Psalms 91 every day, before leaving their houses. God is real and he loves & cares about you. Read these verses over and over, till you memorize them. Then speak them out loud and believe me, God will begin to work in your life.
His word will not return unto him void. The Bible is a living book, inspired by the Holy Ghost.
Psalms 31:22 For I said in my haste, I am cut off from before thine eyes: nevertheless thou heardest the voice of my supplications when I cried unto thee.
23 O love the LORD, all ye his saints: for the LORD preserveth the faithful, and plentifully rewardeth the proud doer.
24 Be of good courage, and he shall strengthen your heart, all ye that hope in the LORD.
If you need a Bible online, this is the one I use...

These answers do not help my situation. My husband is young not elderly. We still have young children at home. We have no savings. He is a vet but not service related. So...how does one pay for assisted living now? No annuity, no other family members, no Medicaid, cannot sell our house and leave us and children homeless besides not a lot of equity there. Life insurance is provided by previous employer from where he worked when becoming disabled so no sell value or selling privilege. No pension, no retirement, no Ira's or 401ks. He needs assisted living. Now what?

I live in New York and have been looking for assisted living for my 81 year old mother. The best case scenario for cost is $6,000 to. $10,000 a month. Incredibly expensive and out of reach when you consider in addition to rent you pay for a level of care which is determined by facility as well as medication management. These can add an additional $800 to $2200 a month. Also some facilities raise the rent yearly!! Talk about taking advantage of people. My brother and I feel so badly that we can't afford to help my mom more.

Does Medicaid pay for a in home Caregiver?
Its for my sister she is in need of help and daily need such as Cooking Light cleaning shopping Dr appointment things like that. The ironic part about this is that I used to do this I worked in healthcare for over 35 years.I am the only advocate for my family I had cancer surgery in 2011 and unfortunately I had to file for Social Security disability because my surgery left me with the condition called Brachial Plexopathy.I only can use NY right hand.I miss working with people as I was very good at what I did,I recently had to put my father into a nursing home due to dementia.Ive always then the caretaker in my family now I find myself in a position that I need help taking care of my family.I'm very thankful for this site I dont feel so alone anymore. I realize how hard it is to be a caregiver especially when it comes to family I think all of you and if anybody has any advice for me please feel free to let me know my name is Diana. My sister has Medicaid is anybody familiar with in home care that takes Medicaid if so please email me back.

It's reassuring to see that veterans benefits do cover assisted living expenses in their elderly years. My mom use to own and operate a care facility in our home town. We had many veterans who lived their and we always worked with the VA and government in order to make it possible for them to stay there. It was also interesting to see the cost differences in assisted living care and actually living in a care facility.

Great information! I didn't know that you can generally expect to pay $2,000 to $5,000 per month for assisted living. That sounds like a great deal, especially compared to the $5,000 to $10,000 you can pay for nursing homes. I feel like as a senior, I would prefer to grow old in the comfort of my own house. I like that assisted living allows people to do that. However, I can definitely see the benefits of living in a care center as well. I think it's just a personal thing, each person needs something and somewhere different.

All of her financial assests are gone do to this debilitating ailment. I am very stressed to find funds to pay for her care. All she has is social; security. My Father was a veteran and died in 1974, My Mother remarried in 1976, not to a veteran, so the VA says she is not entitled to any benefits . This $1100, combined with her social security would make the difference in paying for her care. I am at a loss to search for funds to help her. I do not own my own home or I would get a 2nd mortgage to help her, what are your suggestions for me.

There are several ways to pay for long-term care facilities, what's important is you have a broad knowledge about the different settings so you can choose the right one for your loved ones. Although most boomers and seniors prefer to received care in the comfort of their home, there are certain situations where you have to put them into an assisted living facility depending on their condition. Aside from assisted living, there are other types of settings as discussed in www.longtermcareprimer.com/, however, choosing and paying for the right facility may be a huge challenge knowing that you will be entrusting the well being of your loved ones to strangers. Thus, you should consider every aspect and factors before putting them into one.

Excellent article and I recommend that you give the option of downloading in pdf. ( If it is already there, my apologies.)
A quick glance led me to conclude that Medicare is not addressed on the same basis as Veteran's benefits. We have both Medicare and secondary retiree insurance from my earlier employer.
We are actively evaluating various options for independent/assisted living places and I must admit that so far I have not received a clear answer on my specific question: Can we make use of all Medicare benefits if I join one of these centers? Thank you

I have been approved in Naugatuck for Sec. 8. I only get $782. A month on disability. I'm a 62 year old with APS, MS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, inconteince, and restless leg syndrome. I can't walk but get around on a scooter. I can take care of myself except for the few times I fall and can't get up. I have a queen size adjustable bed and an electric recliner.
These keep my feet from swelling too much. I can't get in and out of a regular tub but I can use a shower with bars to hold onto and a seat for when my legs get sore.

Its hard to find caregivers who will only come in for 2 hours a day to relieve me. I have no siblings to help...he has Medicare A and B only which doesn't cover assisted living...suggestions?

Hoping some one could help me with my 58 yr brother. He was highly successful and then got into meth at 45 yrs. He lives with my mom. If he did not live there he would be homeless. He did that before my mom took him in.He looks and acts normal most of the time. But the meth has done it's cruelty to my brother. He has hard time with sequences. My mom has to tell him to take his RX and to bathe. Yet, he is independent and will go off for a few days with friends and come back.He is also gay and is HIV+. I'm looking down the road my mom is 80 yrs old and when she passes on...I was thinking of a group home that allows him some freedom to come and go with permission. He has not used in 12 yrs. He gets government assistance since he paid into it for so long. He doesn't get a lot, and we had to apply for him. Any help would be appreciated.

Good points if any applu. Too much to qualify for assistance; not enough to do on own. No other family members ... Guess this will be the same problem that many middle class single boomers will be facing as more and more are tasked with caring for aging parents.

My sister is on disability and has no chance at ever living a normal life again. She has chronic DVT's..yes MULTIPLE, numerous stomach issues, heart issues, a carotid artery problem and now to top it off, she was diagnosed with Epilepsy! She is only 45 years old and is on Medicare not Medicaid. I feel her best bet is to get into an assisted living facility BUT, we can't afford it! Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can do to make her life any better? Please help! I'm so scared for her at this point.
Hi there I'm here in a nursing home. Been here for 15 mo!! All is being paid thru medicaid issuance. I am getting stronger, better am in a long term unit. I have been looking into assist living facility. I have found one that requires me to pay out of pocket. I do receive ssi benefits $733 dollars, my out of pocket pay will be $167 dollors. other then say family are their any options for which I should be looking into?
If you need a Bible online, this is the one I use... http://www.theophilos.com/ God bless you all. In Jesus name. Amen.
Its interesting :)
Really good
I have recently become very concerned about my ability to handle my disabilities by myself. Have had type 1 diabetes for 36 years, had multiple debilitating accidents, and am on ssdi, since 2005. This is my only income, and I've run out of ways to pay rent and necessary bills. I've looked for work, somewhat haphazardly, and would admit;if I were the hiring officer, looking at mymedical concerns and problems, I wouldn't hire me.. I am 56 years old and am afraid I'm gonna fall in the cracks soon. Any suggestions?
Do I have to sign a lease for a specific period of time? I'm waiting to get into a place where some of my family are, so I don't want to sign a long term lease & loose the appartment I'm waiting for.
I don't know how to find resources to help me pay for this senior home living. I'm forgetful at times and have depression and am a private person and scared to drive or answer phones I'm insecure of many things and have panic attacks and anxiety too... I am a Christin.. I'm very quite , noise makes me jump ,and I have a problem with my right knee it locks up some times on me. ..I use to fall some in past but I was told it was stress. Was in hospital last year 5 times for out control blood pressure stroke level)... I'm confused about my lease when to renew it or how to move or when to get out my lease to move. I'm not clear on many things , Ive had brain scan Doctor say I'm aging ok in my head , I don't have alzhimers . I do some times write backwards misspell lots and write numbers backwards..I have not went to doctors fro my blood pressure meds in a year and I believe Jesus has healed me.Im very nervous and scared to drive I get lost finding my way home or to a location at times .
Now what?
I'm just a poor "OLD" woman that has problems keeping a single home running. Only need a decent place to eat, sleep and stay warm. Do occasionally take jobs to make ends meet. Do not have money, just a small, small retirement check from Social Security. Don't know where to turn to now!!!

Selling real estate is an option for paying for assisted living care. For many people a reverse mortgage is not a good choice because of all the paperwork and time involved. Selling the real estate to someone who can pay cash and close in 7 days or less is a better option.

My Mother is at an assisited living facility, but will have to move out because she was told she didn't qualify for Medicaid after being told she was. the case worker called me a week after she went in and said she had made a mistake! The facility has given us a price of $2300.00 But that leaves me paying her supplemental ins. premiums and also for her incontinence needs and prescriptions. We have applied for VA benefits but don't know how long that will take. ANY advice would be greatly appreciated! The deadline is 9/23 if we don't bring her home them we will be incurring more debt with the facility.
Need assistance in finding facility for adult daughter who's diagnosed schizphrenia. Live in mcdonough George
I provide assisted living for my father in my home. Can I draw up a contract between us so I can receive income from him for care? I was thinking I could spend down his $ on assisted living expenses. I would claim it as income on my taxes. I am a licensed nurse, currently giving him IV antibotics at home, and have been caring for him for 4 years, its taking more of my time. Ive had to cut my hours to meet his needs.
What if you don't have any family and only have social security
What age does one have to be to qualify for assisted housing?
Sincerely, Diana

look ing for assisteed living
Looking for a place to live I am m 43 years old with type I diabetes and MS.
My Mother has Alzheimers and had a long term care policy that has now maxed out. She is still needeing much care and now resides in a board & care facility.
My grandparents are both aging very quickly and it is hard to see. I am glad that this article talks about the difficulties of not only affording assisted living, but also the choices involved in renting out the family home and things like that. I am grateful for the ideas here because I know that my family can find ways to talk to my grandparents about finances without overwhelming them. Fortunately, I feel as though my family will be able to pool resources in order to pay for the assisted living.
My mother is 84 she has fallen 3 times this year the last time fractured a rib very painful. Looking for financial help to care for her. It is very over whelming for me I am the only one caring for her right now. Havent had much luck trying to place her in a home that will take medicare or medicaid? Will take any suggestions???
Please, can anyone help me? My mother needs 24 hour care but not skilled nursing. We have contacted the Area Agency on Aging and they can't help us because she makes about 200.00$ too much for in home care. She is just left the hjospital due to a fall and is now in a LTC facility.. However, we are not happy with it. It was the only place with a bed at the moment. She has nothing but her SSI to live on. How can we get here into a nicer place closer to home on 1700. a month?
If we do not need assisted living right now, what category are we? Independent?
this is all new to me and a little scary. I'm 71, live alone, and am independent. just testing the water for future reference. I'm also a disabled vet. living on s.s. and veterans disability pention. its not much, but I get by.
Thorough and concise, complete with handy links. I didn't think I would find any new resources, but I was wrong! Really well done. THANK YOU!
What about the senior who is not a vet, has no life insurance, no home to rent, sell or mortgage, no pension, no resources, no family -- guess we're up the creek w/o a paddle. I have some meager savings which would just barely cover maybe 2 months of assisted living care. Then I guess I'd be out on the street. Something is really wrong with the system!
I have never really heard of care insurance. This is something that I will have to look further into.
I am looking for an assisted living facility for my parents. My father is 96 years old, legally blind and has celiac disease....he enjoys walking when the weather is not too hot. My mother is 86, suffers from arthritis and has congestive heart failure. She is contents with sitting all day watching TV. Neither can still drive. I need a placement where they can remain together in the same room. The only income they have is their social security and there are no other assets. I am an only child living on a fixed income and caring for them is wearing me out.
Had no idea about this resource and was helpful to know that. I'd welcome any advice for families without VA qualifications, like an ordinary average elderly on fixed income and moderate assets.
True experience is the best teacher
Excellent information about independent living, and a wealth of information about paying for the living at a facility.
The article provided me with important information and options on how to pay for Assisted Living. I had absolutely no idea as to where to begin.
Worst article, some options were far from feasible! Article was grasping for possibilities that most people are not privileged to have.
keep up the good work
I need to find out soon, if I can get Medicaid in my State of Indiana. I am in Wakarusa IN now. I need to stay in my home for now and get help in my home now and in the near future. I the future, I will need an assisted living in Wakausa or Nappanee In to use Medicaid only.
Good review of what I already knew
No because production payments options are all known. What isn't know is where the facilities are that except Medicaid

Hello, Our family advisors are available seven days a week by phone and can help you find senior living for your mom: (866) 824-8174 This is a free service for family caregivers, and the team can even assist in scheduling tours. The family advisors have more info about individual communities, and we hope you'll get in touch with them soon. You can also reach our Help Desk here: http://www.caring.com/about/contact.html We unfortunately cannot really assist with referral here, because the consult involves learning more about your needs, budget, preferences, and follow-up via email or phone (private info that is best handled via phone or our Help Desk). Thanks!
My brother is unable to read or write, but physically he doesn't look disabled. He has diabetes and other medical problems, but nothing out of the ordinary being over weight and use to smoke. He can take care of himself as far as washing, cleaning and feeding. He just can't take care of the financial aspect of life. Should he be in assistant living?
Hello Everyone, If you are in need of assisted living options, Caring.com's Family Advisors are here to help. They can be reach at 866 824 8174 seven days a week.
My dad recently fell and broke his hip and has heart problems. He is 73 and on medicare in Alabama, he also has dementia. Has been in rehab for the past month for the hip. My mom is also on medicaid and has heart problems. They cannot go back home as it is in the middle of nowhere with no services. I just found out that most retirement communities do not accept medicare cause they are money hungry. What do I do as a child?
Thank you so much for all this information. I am taking care of my mother who has Alzheimers and will be needing to go into an assisted living situation once I can no longer take care of her. She gets money every month from my father's pension, but it may not be enough to pay for the cost of the assisted living situation.Your article gave me renewed hope that I may be able to have mom move into a facility when the time comes and offers options I didn't know existed. thanks so much! Find Out What Items Medicare Will (and Won't) Pay For
Options, especially the VA for my older brother. We didn't know about that assistance. He doesn't need it now, but it is nice to know it is there.
it gives me the option of contacting VA as we have no money. Thanks
You should address the % needed from Social Security to lived in a good facility built with government subsidy. It must be safe, have a good reputation, welcome all kinds of people w/o safety for others issues, and have acceptable food as an option for those who do not wish to cook all meals or go into a nursing home. Thanx
An informative article which states that Assisted living can be much more affordable than nursing home care or long term in-home care and gives you an idea of the cost range and talks about paying for Assisted Living with veterans benefits and other ways of paying.
Mother in law lives with us now; has dialysis 3 x per week and is 85 years old and getting really slow--this gives me an outlook to the future.
My stepmother's home is being sold to pay for her assisted living care in Wisconsin. The court appointed guardian is also having an estate sale to sell off her personal items, clothes and furniture. My stepmother was not given the option to remove her personal property before the sale of the house. Is this legal?
How about those middle class that do not have that type of money and no one seems to care or help. I was told ssi cannot help. And know i find myself taking care of another child who is my mom. It is too much with home a full time job and family. It is taking a toll on the house. I cannot leave my job to stay home.
good day

Yes Iam a nearly open nice small assisted living private and state assistance. Iam looking for clients. canyou help me.
Excellent article and I recommend that you give the option of downloading in pdf. ( If it is already there, my apologies.) A quick glance led me to conclude that Medicare is not addressed on the same basis as Veteran's benefits. We have both Medicare and secondary retiree insurance from my earlier employer. We are actively evaluating various options for independent/assisted living places and I must admit that so far I have not received a clear answer on my specific question: Can we make use of all Medicare benefits if I join one of these centers? Thank you
Have Pension and SSD, not enough for Assisted Living; did not think of Life Insurance
I LOOKING FOR ASSISTED LIVING BECAUSE I HAVE R.A. AN FYBRO. AN BI-POLAR TYPE 1 AN I GET $710. FROM SSI ASSISTED LIVING IN OHIO RUNS FROM $2000.TO $5000.

Insight on paying. I did not consider the possibility of veteran's benefits.
I just live on my Social Security. I would need financial help to live in Assisted Living.

My father is 87 yrs old..I have him in a condo closeby. I work full time, go twice a day to make his meals, and after 5 months of doing this I'm worn out. He is on NO meds and hasn't seen a doctor in years. If I put him in assisted living they will take all his money in no time. He only gets $990 a month in SS. Its hard to find caregivers who will only come in for 2 hours a day to relieve me. I have no siblings to help...he has Medicare A and B only which doesn't cover assisted living...suggestions?
And you're not there yet, but this coulde a boon for me... as an example. David

financial assistance...
I live on a $1500. pension with car payment and a couple of other bills, I am a sickly person and usually spend lot of money on doctors and meds which leaves me nothing for rental and survival. I am 60 not quite SSN age nor Medicare, It s impossible to live on less than $100 a month for meds, food and gas. I never go out I am about to be homeless, is there any assistance, I can't find a job and not disable yet. I still have my mind and can walk and stand some but not alot without going into pain bad back and damaged nerves. I feel so hopeless and a grim future. What can I do?
I am not a senior or have any insurance. I get $200.00 a week alimony. I have many medical problems and am forgetting to take medications and have managed to have all of my family to hate me and will not speak to me. Please tell me what I can do if any?
How to qualify. Who qualifies and who to contact.
Very concrete and practical solutions to difficult problems
Very informative and key subject matters - viewed website for potential assisted living in local area, THEN uncovered a world of comprehensive information that is relevant to my senior care needs.
Just saw Important current event regarding deceptive practices in advertising for reverse mortgages from Monday's news: http://www.baltimoresun.com/business/real-estate/la-fi-mo-mortgage-ads-regulators-20121119,0,1290001.story
Those suggestions are great for folks that lead somewhat privileged lives. My family member survived on a clerk's salary, never owned her home or could afford any kind of insurance. The Medicaid option is all that is left. Any more suggestions for people like her?
Good points if any applu. Too much to qualify for assistance; not enough to do on own. No other family members ... Guess this will be the same problem that many middle class single boomers will be facing as more and more are tasked with caring for aging parents.
