Antibiotics are usually prescribed for NTM, sometimes three to five different kinds. This medication may be needed for several years. Antibiotics have many side effects, and people who take them should be carefully monitored. Sometimes, antibiotics are given using a needle placed directly into a vein. This can be done daily in the home or at the hospital or doctor's office. Antibiotics can also be given by inhalation using a nebulizer. Caregivers will need to be trained in the correct way to give antibiotics to people with NTM.
