ILD can sometimes be treated successfully with medications that reduce inflammation, although damage that has already occurred cannot be reversed. The most frequently used medications for ILD are the anti-inflammatories and immune suppressing (immunosuppressive) drugs, which intentionally suppress an overactive immune system to reduce inflammation. The medications for ILD can cause potentially serious side effects, and people who take these drugs need to see their doctors regularly for monitoring.
