I am glad, that milk helps you sleep. I drink mine with honey. It is so delicious. Also, if oatmeal is sleep promoter, people shouldn't eat it for breakfast, they will be sleepy all day. I eat my oatmeal every morning, with milk. Maybe that's why I am like a zombie during day......

An addition to the recipe below would be to add some sliced bananas. I wonder if warming them would release tyramine ?

I read all the comments and came up with this idea for a nightcap recipe: Warm some tart cherry juice in the microwave. Add a pinch of cinnamon, sugar or sugar substitute to taste (optional), and crumble in a rice cake to desired consistency. Yum!

These are my favorite snacks!! No wonder I'm always walking around in a fog.

All of it. But hot oatmeal in warm milk with bananas--triple threat!

Many nights I am unable to sleep. After reading the information on what foods to eat to help you sleep, I realized that I was not eating the right things and will certainly change my way of snacking at night. Thank you for the info.

What a fantastic article, my favorite aspect being that on the "5 Foods to Help You Sleep". Very surprising to me. A BIG thank you!

is it the apropiate time to fear chocolate?

It would be good to know the time frame, meaning, how many hours before going to bed should one eat the foods. Thanks

I learned a few "do's and don'ts" for eating and drinking certain items before bedtime. I have a very difficult time falling asleep every night, and have for a couple of years. But now I know of foods to eat that may help me get more sleep. Thanks

This makes a lot of sense. Thanks for writing it.

Wonderful information. I will share with co-workers

I'm vegan, so that rules out milk. I follow the no grain diet, so that rules out toast and oatmeal. I would definitely not eat cherries at night (way too sweet/flavorful for a bedtime snack). I like bananas, but only as a dessert and frozen. Potatoes and rice both have natural melatonin and they are easy on the stomach and not too flavorful as a bedtime snack. Especially rice. Organic rice cakes should be number one. I cannot sleep if I start feeling hungry, so I keep rice cakes next to my bed at all times.

The antiacids by the bedside and sleeping in the dark. Thanks.

Knowing that warmed milk is a plus. I drink it almost every evening.

All of it, I do have symptoms and blame it on the stress of care giving and get over tired. The foods were especially helpful.

Your Health Tips are very informative

Very helpful indeed!

I surprise eating a turkey sandwich didn't make the list. Doesn't turkey meat contain tryptophan? Which is why after a large Thanksgiving dinner most people feel sleepy soon afterwards. Plus turkey is lean meat, so it won't add too much to the waistline.

There was a recent news program or article that informed that the amount of enzyme L-triptophan in milk was so minimal, it would take multiple times the recommended dosage to even get near a level to actually induce sleep. Wish I could remember the source--sorry.

confirmation of my perception that my nasal passages are just too narrow to give me enough air

Anonymous said 9 months ago

I usually don't get enough sleep, but I like bananas and toast so I always have some on hand so I will eat some before retiring.

Helpful info! I work 2nd shift, & have insomnia. Glad to confirm toast is good!

The only food I knew about was the warm milk, this is great to know that there are other choices for helping me to get to sleep! Thanks ;0)

This article was very helpful! My 83 year old Mother is in a Nursing Home due mainly to Dementia. She complains she does not sleep well at night, but I will not allow them to drug her! I have provided them with Melatonin to give to her, so now I will also buy her some 5-HTP and Magnesium for them to give her.

Didn't know about the cherries - I love cherries! Thanks.

You could have made the suggestion of drinking a glass of tart cherry juice. There is an organic one made in Ontario with the Montmorency tart cherry.... helpful for times when it is not cherry season! It was fun to see 5 of the things I love in one " little midnight snack.":o)

Anonymous said 11 months ago

Excellent information. The one that works the best for me is the tart cherry juice. My doctor told me about it several months ago and I have been drinking a glass two hours before I turn in. She also told me about a free tart cherry health report from Traverse Bay Farms http://www.tartcherryhealthreport.com

Anonymous said 11 months ago

You list oatmeal on your '5 foods that help you sleep' list and also on your '5 foods that fight fatigue' list. Confused.

Thanks all - for the above information....I appreciate it :) Hugs all round!

I think it's great as it is :) 5 foods (not too many-that's good) And I didn't know about cherries or bananas being helpful for sleeping (I have trouble sleeping) & I didn't know toast was either....very interesting that these foods stimulate tryptophan & serotonin. Also that calcium foods promote sleep - I didn't know this either....very useful information. Thank you :)

P.P.S. Sorry for the block text >.< All the spacing got eaten. I posted it in a more readable format here: jsfood.livejournal.com

Thanks for the info! I used it towards a sleepfood recipe... Cherry banana oatmeal makes about 2 servings per 1 banana Ingredients (All to taste): Oatmeal Cherries Banana, sliced Milk or soymilk (Veganlove speaks the truth) Vanilla extract (half teaspoon) Coconut extract (optional, half teaspoon) Cinnamon (a pinch) Nutmeg (a pinch) Salt (a pinch) Sugar (entirely optional and not necessary. sweet and tasty without it!) Simmer milk in a pot and add vanilla, cinnamon, nutmeg, salt, and (optional)coconut extract (and sugar, if you must, but it won't help sleep) Add oatmeal, stir occasionally until cooked. Then add sliced bananas and cherries, mix thoroughly. I'm having some right now (minus the cherries which I didn't have onhand) I'll see how much it helps with sleep, but at least it's tasty and healthy :3 P.S. ... I put in too much milk for the amount of oatmeal I had left in the container. So to soak up the liquid and add some fiber I added shredded wheat. They sort of disintegrated in when I stirred. Might have to do this again - on purpose :3

milk is one of the unhealthiest things on the market. if it wasn't for lobbyism and private interests the public wouldnt be so deceived about its nutrition. for example... the body absorbs almost none of the calcium in milk. all it is good for is protein, but that protein is all complex fats which are really only healthy for infants...

A useful article. Thanks

Great article! I'm getting cherries.

informative.

This is a great source of unknown information, for someone who struggles with sleep problems. I was especially found 4 of the 5 foods that promote sleep to be surprising , and something to more to incorporate into daily meals.

I winced at the list of foods that sabotage sleep -- I've certainly been guilty of most of them. I smiled at the "help you sleep" foods, especially the cherries -- I'd never heard about their melatonin.

Great! Thanks !! =)

after 34 yrs in marines, 6 bullet wounds, 2 stabbings, epiglotitisx2 , five ear tympanoplasties, arthritis, kidney transplant , diabetes histoplasmosis and brain cancer requiring 6 ops and 28 radiation and chemos a night of sleep was a rare dream over the counter aids are junk and sleeping pills like lunesta mixed with my other pills works like speed . i read about the cherries and tried them along with a generic acetophimin pm which is half benydryl which they put in chemo to realx and sleep and of the 4 brands i've tried ocean spray, minute maid and 2 others i found minute made jst knocks me out for 6 to 7 hours and i also suffer from old man 58 lol night pee attacks where you pull the trigger and nothing happens 30 times a night so i take flowmaxx prescription which cuts trips to bathroom down to 5 or 6 , with the cherries andacetophenim and a sleep mantra taught as self hypnosis i was as deep sleeper better then when iwas a kid, so it is reallt the reall deal trust me

Spotlighting these "breakfast foods" except for cherries. Love how it points out the value of these foods, helping those who read and think about the article, to stay away from the pharmaceuticals, for the issues of sleeplessness. This is so simple, and it works; I have been trying it. Thanks.

Melanie updated this article which was posted at length across multi-pages. When I look at the five foods on one page, I realize most of them are breakfast foods! So how are we supposed to get up and go if we're eating foods that put us to sleep? Maybe we need to reconsider what we have for breakfast.

I found out why I get tired after lunch. I usually eat one or two of those items. I will be changing to evening intake. Thanks alot...

Never knew that these foods would help promote sleep. Interesting to know.

Sources?

Anonymous said 12 months ago

Over-ripe bananas contain high levels of tyramine which your other article states correctly will interfere with sleep.

Reply to the Caregivers Voice: My take further, in response, is that it is information to be used thoughtfully taking into consideration all of the other factors..and there are many to possibly consider. But I believe the suggestion in the article is to eat these basic breakfast foods an hour before bed. Not right before bed. And they are simple foods to digest. The article doesn't say how much of cherries, toast, milk oatmeal and bananas would consitute a viable recipe....so that is a bit vague, leaving it up to the caregivers to discover for ourselves. I would like to hear amounts....bottom line...1/2 cup or what?

Amazing, I didn't know cherries (dried and fresh--esp. tart ones) contain melatonin. Hmmmm. Then again, we should not be eating / drinking before we go to bed. Our tummies need to complete the digestion process before we lie down to sleep. A sip or two of water is good, but anything that goes into the stomach will trigger the process of digestion which will only upset us while lying horizontal. Just my thoughts. What are yours?

Easy to use references....quick and to the point. And I wouldn't have thought of cherries for a sleep aid..dried or fresh. Also bananas; knew they are a good source of potassium and magnesium; wasn't aware they also contain L-tryptophan, and didn't know that was converted to 5-HTP. I love getting supplements through my food.

The information about bananas and oatmeal! I always have them for my breakfast, when I should be having them for dessert. That could be why I feel sleepy when I get to work. :) And maybe I would sleep through the night better. Hmm...

I have been drinking a banana ,cherry, milk smoothie about a hour before i go to bed and it DOES work!!!!And also at times i also add acouple of strawberries which is good to relax you from stress. Also eating dried cherries works.Try it you will have a good nights rest.

I think this is most possible. Actually I have eaten breakfast foods in the evening and felt very relaxed.

The article is incorrect in paragraph 4 (Oatmeal) where it states that insulin production raises blood sugar levels, thereby inducing sleep. In fact, it is the carbohydrates that raise blood sugar levels, to which the body then responds by making more insulin to lower those levels. It is that lowering of blood sugar than causes sleepiness. The writer(s) should be more careful.

thats cool its food that start a day and end the day!!!

I always thought that these foods were good for the start of the day. Noit to put me to sleep

That's exactly what I was thinking about... All this talk about having oatmeal, toast and bananas for breakfast seems a bit counterintuitive, dont you think?!?!?

SO...basically breakfast foods.
