Dealing with Boredom

Boredom is another problem for people who are ill, and fighting it can take all your creativity. Try:

  • watching funny movies
  • taking car or bus trips
  • listening to music, especially from the person's youth
  • taking up hobbies
  • going to social events
  • playing board games and card games
  • attending public library discussion clubs and using large-print or talking books
  • joining activist organizations like the League of Women Voters and Gray Panthers
  • spending time with others in similar difficulties—in religious groups, recreation centers, stroke clubs (contact the National Stroke Association), or the YMCA/ YWCA
  • being involved in volunteer service organizations such as the Retired & Senior Volunteer Program
  • using a computer and accessing sites on the Internet (which helps prevent loneliness through interesting activity and provides the ability to communicate with family and friends through e-mail)
