There is a network of transportation services, public and private, that will pick up the disabled and the elderly at their homes. These services rely on vans and paid drivers and run on a schedule to specific locations. Free transportation is available from community volunteer organizations, although most public services charge on a sliding scale.

NOTE. Many states ensure transportation to necessary medical care for Medicaid recipients. Check with your local Medicaid office to see if you qualify.

Community transportation services are provided by:

  • home health care agencies
  • public health departments
  • religious organizations
  • civic clubs
  • the local American Red Cross
  • the Area Agency on Aging
  • local public transportation companies
