Dressing a person with chronic lung disease can be made easier by following a routine. Before you begin, lay the clothes out in the order in which they will be put on.

  • Dress the person while he or she is sitting.
  • Use adaptive equipment like a button hook and shoehorn.
  • Use loose clothes that are easy to put on and have elastic waistbands, Velcro fasteners, and front openings.
  • Use bras that open and close in front.
  • Use tube socks.

It is important that the person with lung disease wear comfortable, loose clothing. If belts are worn they should not be tight. Women should not wear bras that are tight and restrictive. Shoes that slip on and off should be worn instead of those with laces. Buttoned shirts require less effort for the person with lung disease and he doesn’t need to remove the oxygen to take off the shirt.
