There are more than 3,100 hospices in this country and the hospice in your community can provide information and help you answer some of the difficult decisions that accompany terminal illness and dying. Here are some questions you can ask in selecting hospice care:
- Is the agency licensed and accredited by a nationally recognized organization?
- Are they Medicare certified?
- What are their billing policies and payment plans?
- Can they provide references, such as local hospital and care centers, institutions, and caregivers?
- How do they decide whether an individual is ready for hospice care?
- How are their caregivers supervised?
- What are their expectations about the family's sharing in caregiving?
- Are you comfortable with the program? Does it feel like the right fit?

Hospice- What a sense of relief when they so softly and Quietly stepped into a process that had so many stages. The professional , Calming, understanding group of people in the Bend, Oregon Hospice was all that and more.. Thank you and Bless you and yours as you minister to so many needs.
The other question I think I would add to this list is are they for-profit or non-profit. This question is an important one as, for some people it will effect if they are served or not and for others they simply want to know which agencies are putting the moneys back into the program/community.
Boy, do I wish I had this advice a month ago. I didn't even know enough to ask any questions. Mom's doctor recommended Hospice immediately as he wasn't sure she would live through the weekend. I have been less than satisfied with the entire program ... except for a substitute RN who came once and the health aide, who comes weekdays for an hour or less. The RN doesn't even wear gloves unless I insist and she actually washed the open sores on mom's back with saline solution!!! NOT helpful!
Hi Diane HAll, Thanks for your question. Unfortunately, Caring.com is a website dedicated to helping members care for their aging loved ones and we don't offer any transportation servies. You may, however, be able to find a service like that in our local directory here: (http://www.caring.com/local). I hope that helps! -- Emily

Hi lbndhr: Given the increasing need and popularity of grief support groups, you may be able to turn up some good possibilities simply be doing an Internet search of "grief support" and your city or town. Many people also find fitting grief support groups through counselors who specialize in grief. For pointers on finding such souls, go to: www.caring.com/questions/find-a-grief-counselor.
