you can also conduct your own background investigation of the facilities you are eyeing. similarly, having an idea of long term care costs in your area can also help you make better choices. see long term care costs by state here: http://completelongtermcare.com/states/

I have a son with down syndrome in a group home. I want to live near him as I do now. I want to be on a waiting list for assisted living for when my husband can no longer care for me.

All these articles are helpful in most areas except cost. Cost is the most important thing for us and we find that a lot of information is given but no one wants to say how much these things cost. So far I have found that assisted living facilities are so far out of reach for the average person yet nursing homes that provide care 24-7 are cheaper. My mother is not ready for a nursing home. She values her independence but her short term memory is shot. Luckily, she only takes 1 perscription med and a multivitamin daily but she often forgets even though I have made memory cards, calender and time/day clock to help her. She is fully functional but needs to be around people her own age.

A few more details about average prices and such would be nice.

The links in an earlier paragraph are broken... The correct links are as follows, "ALFA has created a consumer checklist, http://www.alfa.org/alfa/NewsBot.asp?MODE=VIEW&ID=846, that can help guide you through the process of checking out various assisted living communities. ALFA also provides a list of state agencies that oversee assisted living,http://www.alfa.org/alfa/State_Regulations_and_Licensing_Informat.asp, which you can contact to see whether there have been any complaints about a community you're considering.
