The professionals at work during this stage of care may well save your survivor's life. As the caregiver, you won't have much interaction with this group. Think of your survivor's care as a chain of survival, and each professional is a link in that chain.

  • EMT --The emergency technicians who respond to your medical emergency and will work to stabilize the person having the stroke.
  • ER Nurse --The emergency room nurse monitors the patient, administers medications, and ensures procedures are carried out as ordered by the ER physician; the ER nurse also documents the patient's care.
  • ER Physician --This doctor performs the first physical exam, works to stabilize the patient, and orders any tests or scans needed for diagnosis.
  • Neurologist --This brain doctor takes over once a stroke diagnosis is given.
  • Neuroradiologist --This specialist uses radioactive substances, X rays, and scanning devices to diagnose diseases of the nervous system.
  • Interventional radiologist --This physician uses scanning technology to guide the delivery and use of balloons, as well as catheters with drugs and stents for treatment of acute stroke.
  • Neurosurgeon --Treatment for some strokes, particularly broken-artery (hemorrhagic) strokes, involves brain surgery.

NOTE: Dial 9-1-1 if you observe stroke symptoms. Tell the dispatcher that the person is having a stroke. Don't take the person to the hospital yourself. Here's why --

1. He will probably get there sooner by ambulance.

2. The emergency personnel will begin to stabilize the patient immediately.

3. A recent study showed that stroke patients who arrive at the hospital by ambulance receive more appropriate care more quickly. Have the person's chart and list of medications ready when the ambulance comes; and don't forget if there is an Advance Directive (a legal document stating a person's healthcare preferences.)
