Peter Pompei - Director, Internal Medicine Clinic, Stanford University Hospital and Clinics

Peter Pompei, M.D., F.A.C.P., specializes in geriatric medicine and holds the titles of Director, Internal Medicine Clinic, and Associate Director, Internal Medicine Residency Program at Stanford University Hospital and Clinics. At Stanford University School of Medicine, Peter holds the title of Associate Professor, and he is a core faculty member at the Stanford Geriatric Center. He is also Medical Director at Lytton Gardens Health Care Center and Classic Residence by Hyatt Health Care Center.

Peter has also held positions in national professional organizations such as the American Geriatrics Society, the Society of General Internal Medicine (on the Improving Doctoring for Elder Americans Task Force), and the American Federation for Aging Research. His numerous awards include a Geriatrics Recognition Award from the American Geriatrics Society and honors for teaching excellence from both the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation.

Peter observes that the great burden in illness falls on older people. They acquire diseases that affect many organ systems, and caring for them requires broad-based knowledge and special attention to the goals of care. Noting that he participates in the care of a diverse and deserving group of older persons, Peter says, "They each have an interesting life story and experiences that promote wonder and foster engagement. Shepherding them through the health concerns of their later years of life is enriching and very rewarding."

Andrew Scharlach - Professor of Social Welfare, University of California at Berkeley

Andrew is a Professor of Social Welfare at the University of California at Berkeley, where he holds the Eugene and Rose Kleiner Chair in Aging and directs the gerontology specialization in the School of Social Welfare. He also serves as Director of the Center for the Advanced Study of Aging Services, which conducts research designed to inform development of innovative and effective services for older adults. Andy is a gubernatorial appointee on the California Commission on Aging, and he has published extensively on the needs of older adults and their families, especially on the topics of long-term care services, work and family responsibilities, bereavement, and gerontological social work education.

He became interested in aging as his life's work when, in his 20s, he was sitting with an 85-year-old nursing home resident. Realizing that the older man probably was probably very similar to him in his 20s, Andy thought that in the future he might well be much like the nursing home resident.

Noting that younger people tend to see older ones primarily as "old bodies" rather than as individuals with a wealth of experience and wisdom, Andy sees helping older people as a potential source of personal growth and a natural part of life. As a professional, he prefers to focus less on trying to make elder care less demanding, and more on enabling it to be more fulfilling.

David Solie - Author; Managing Director of Marsh Private Client Services

David, the author of How To Say It to Seniors: Closing the Communication Gap with Our Elders (Prentice Hall Press), is an expert in the area of geriatric psychology and its impact on working with older clients. He is also the medical director for Marsh Private Client Services, where his business unit specializes in life insurance as part of the estate planning process. For more than 20 years, David has created and delivered educational courses for the insurance and financial services industries, and he has been a featured speaker at Pepperdine University, Merrill Lynch, Smith Barney, Blue Cross, The Million Dollar Round Table, The International Forum, The Association for Advanced Life Underwriters, The Western Regional Planned Giving Conference, The California CPA Conference, and The Dallas Estate Planning Council.

David is a graduate of the University of Washington, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Colorado Medical School. He holds an advanced degree in clinical medicine and extensive training in the areas of cardiology, oncology, and geriatrics.

David's experiences finding new ways to understand and connect with his mother after the death of his father sparked his interest in intergenerational communication. While reconsidering assumptions about older adults and finding new ways to relate to them does not avoid the predictable dilemmas of aging, he says, it can change people's ability to understand one another, work together, and find the right legacy.
